EPISODE 83: "The Next Crash"

Finally, here's the new episode. Ivan takes over the hosting duties for this one, and he's got some thoughts about the likelihood of an impending Second Games Industry Crash.

UPDATE: ABOUT THE COMMENTS SECTION: Okay. I have no idea what happened to the comments here. For some reason, the Intense Debate comment threads sometimes get randomly dropped from this particular blog. What I THINK is happening is that somehow people are accessing and using the old Blogger comment-system (which you still shouldn't be able to do, but if it wasn't buggy as hell it wouldn't be Blogger...) and that cause the ID thread to disappear. I'm sorry about this and I know it sucks for anyone who was in the midst of conversation via ID. I will be re-posting this episode in a new ID-enabled thread for anyone who wishes to continue with it.

what the holy hell? there was like 64 comments last i saw today now there's.. 1?! let me guress, because of weird goings on with postd (i know i lost like 3 i posted successfully) Bob swapped out of the intense debate package?

hopefully things'll settle in. and I'll link my article (again) that I wanted bob to check sometime when he has a moment. Written prior to this video but very much 180 from what he is claiming:

though at this point a lot of people wrote down their points and likely don't feel like doing it again..lol.

As to that article... Eh... I really don't think the angle he's looking at really has anything to do with it. I was expecting him to talk about how gaming was in its pioneer days and that we've finally reached the point where games aren't going to be so much like movies with attempts to be the next big block buster but instead be more like books with smaller companies and people making games appealing to certain people but making plenty of money to cover it due to the low production costs and eventually things would evolve from there. But this all being just because we know more? We had the internet in the 64 era, people have been sharing info for a while.

Evil... allow me to make one counter argument to your article...

...Deadspace 3...

While the reasons in your article explain why EMOTIONAL reactions will never bring about a crash, this game personifies why one is coming... if not here already.

Like so many other AAA games, the budget was completely out of perportion, demanding sales of 5 million to break even. And while some games CAN and DO sell double, triple, and even up to 6X that, how many do vs how many games in the AAA buisness sell millions and STILL fall short?

This is the big troubling trend that I point to when I personally agree with Moviebob on this one. Im not predicting a total crash, but Im predicting the AAA industry crumbling to it's knees.

Basically, if the industry was more realistic about what it expected, it would be in MUCH better shape... screw the raging arguments about DRM, always online and what ever hoop-a-joop people complain about (often incorrectly... so if this is the "informed" crowd, god help us) now. It's really all about these companies realizing what they can expect and being realistic about it rather then expecting a game to sell 5X platinum in a month and getting pissy with the dev when this inevitably doesnt happen.
