Episode 72 Now Up... Kinda... Look, Read The Post...

EPISODE 72 is now up at ScrewAttack. It's supposed to be for Advantage members only until Saturday, but it looks like it's viewable by everyone right at the moment; so... watch away, I guess. I expect it'll snap back to proper "Advantage Preview Only" status sooner or later, but if so it should be viewable by all on Saturday either way...

I'm surprised you didn't find a piece of music from a NES-era game which had received a dolled-up remix to provide some musical contrast between the two sides in the swordfight. The constant breaking-up of the fight sequence for the Q&A was amusing, especially when Necrothinker got to field one.

Whilst I know where your argument vis a vis game companies over-focusing on gamers comes from I'm not sure it fits. The video games industry ( which should really have a short hand a la Hollywood) has worked out that visibility = profit in a way that the comic book industry never really did. Hell even my father (who hasn't played a video game of his own volition in decades) is really into the new HALO adds. Niche games not advertising outside of niche areas seems more likely to be an issue of funding rather than it not occurring to developers.

The show was really good, especially liked you integrating the story with the overthinking.

While waiting for the entire video to load, I paused about a second or two into it:

"The wind stops, the sea is wild..."

Not a meteorologist, but if there's no wind, how can the sea be wild? Aren't winds (and lunar forces, I guess) responsible for most activity and disturbance on the surface of oceans/seas? Or is the crust of the earth suddenly shattering causing massive tidal waves everywhere?

I should probably just shut up and watch the video...

And once again, you don't bother having an actual DEBATE on your discussion and debate show.

I've given you well over a year to prove that these storylines have some sort of point of being on this show, and with another arc down, I still feel that they're only there due to your inexplicable love for the horrible tripe TGWTG put out at its peak, where you get to play an ego boosting Mary Sue fanfic self-insert of yourself to act out scripts that validate your own opinions on video games.

This arc had actual potential, and it was once again wasted.

Perty kool video. I was able to catch it while it was open for all to see, since I am not an advantage member (yet). I was a little bummed at how blurry it all looked. Not sure if thats the encoding/streaming or the original media..

I was bummed not to have my question answered, but then agan it was a qustion based on a hypothesis about the upcoming Wiiu so I guess it couldn't be answered.

Still the video was decent, not GREAT but not poop. I hope with life getting back to normal for you it'll be easier to devote time to the videos and it improves them a little more. Or at least it gets back some of the wacky fun you were having. All in all this video didn't seem like one you enjoyed doing.. at all.

Yay, new video early!

The verbal comment on The Question You Knew Someone Was Going To Ask really wasn't necessary - the crickets were sufficient (and funnier) by themselves. I didn't discover this show until after the AntiThinker Saga had already happened, although I did go back and watch the older ones (it was actually the second one that convinced me that the whole series was worth watching). While the skits are cheesy and sometimes lack production value (not in the Tapeheads sense, I should hastily add), I do find them charming in a campy sort of way.

So - have you just managed to work for companies that crumbled around you, or do the ones you've worked for all collapse as soon as you leave? Seems like the latter might be a Hel of a resume booster, right there . . .

Damn, i hate reading these inferior articles and reviews from Roger Ebert, why don´t they have any storylines to improve them?

Cheap TGWGT style storylines and subpar humour obviously improves everything!

I generally disagreed with your business speculation. I don't know if you have any formal education in business studies. I have had a little in college, as well as some osmosis from a friend who is really into that stuff, and none of your predictions sound realistic to me. The closest you come to a realistic business plan is the idea of a steam console.

The idea of a single console that plays everything doesn't really work from a technical standpoint either. We would end up like phone and tablet gaming now, where every 6 months your machine is obsolete, so people just buy the games that work on the system they have and rarely bother with new stuff. PC gets around this by having games that scale, but then the plug and play appeal of a console is gone.

The bit about third person games never evolving past contra did make me laugh. One of the only plot points I enjoyed. Also, his overreaction is very similar to a classic overthinker style show I made about hypocritical retro gamer arguments.

Bob, you basically state in this video that you wouldn't abandon the format of storylines mixed with commentary unless you wanted to revert to an "inferior product." I'd like to see you expand on this argument, whether in your show or your blog.

What I really want to know is your opinion on how the storyline enhances the show. That you want to produce these mini-movies is obvious, but your reasoning for putting them into this show is less clear.

I'd also be interested to see you justify the implication that this show's dramatic sequences aren't inferior product. This episode's "action" largely consists of two men waving plastic swords at each other in a parking lot with clanking sound effects dubbed in. If you're serious about filmmaking you must realize this is extremely amateurish; I'd be intrigued to hear how you plan to improve the choreography and budget of these fight sequences. If your reasoning is that they can look cheap because it's comedy then you need to decrease the grim sincerity; I'd be curious to know whether you think this is a concern.

The bottom line on the story is this: You're basically swordfighting yourself and quoting lines from the Dolph Lungren He-Man movie, and I'm neither laughing nor deeply engrossed. I don't know what I'm supposed to get from this, so maybe you could explain it to me.

Hey guys, why do people keep asking for GameOverthinker to quit and/or remove his "embarassing" story elements. Come on guys, can't you see how much he loves doing it? and although i personally don't enjoy them, i just skip those segments (with the help of those conveniantly placed "if you want to see the overthinking, go to this time in the video" messages.) Overthinker has two other amazing webshows and this is the one he gets to have fun with and experiment. you know, try something different. Isn't that what we want to see? experimentation?

I think his comment on when he's going to release an abridged version of his show was well answered. Also, seeing him in the flesh is a nice addition. It feels more personal when he's answering the questions into the camera.

thanks Overthinker, I hope that you keep enjoying doing this show. and keep all your cool retro style stories - no matter what anyone says.

Sabre said...

VampireBadger- I agree with you mostly. I don't like the story sections, but I don't hate them.

The big issue for me is that the story and rants are completely removed from each other. There is no reason he couldn't post the rant as one video, and the action scenes as a different video. However, he has a captive audience. People want his funny rants about game stuff. They have to sit through or skim past the story stuff if they want to get it. If the story stuff was strong enough to stand on it's own, it would be it's own show. He knows it isn't, and thus the people who don't like it are stuck with it.

Also other web shows such as linkara, have the review, with all the plot stuff at the end of the show, so we know it's a format that works, and shows like Pure Pwnage, which pioneered this "Gaming as a secret superpower" style show and was successful until an important cast member died in real life, and the show was picked up by a TV network.

The intro is a reference to the intro to Final Fantasy on the NES. The first few lines are lifted directly from it.

The whole intro is from the first Final Fantasy. And the answer to your question is "because of magic" or something.

I'm gonna have to disagree on one point.

I think Phil's comment is what killed Fez. Every review I saw of it had a good chunk of user comments saying since his comment, they weren't gonna buy his game.

My Name is Patrick Brewer I am a graduating web design student at "The Art Institute of Dallas." I really like your various shows but I think your current web site might be limiting and you deserve better.

I need exposure and sites for my portfolio. I want to build you a free standing site at your own url.
This way you would have complete control over everything that happens to your content.

I don't want to charge you anything. I can even sub-host your domain for awhile if you don't want to go to the trouble of buying your own hosting right now.
All I would want in return is a good reference and the right to list the site as part of my portfolio.

My current web site is located at www.dragonpjb.com. It is a utillity site, a better one is under construction. I will send better contact info to your escapist account.

Hey, Bob. This was a good video, and I'm sorry you went through all the stuff you did while making it.

As for the content of said video, I was wondering if you might elaborate on why you think the Dreamcast could have been the greatest console ever.

Don't get me wrong, I ADORED my DC and will give Sega HUGE props for going balls out with it, but I'd have a hard time putting it above my fave, the PS2.

Sega created more new, original IPs for the DC than I think I've ever seen a major publisher put out. Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Samba de Amigo Seaman and Crazy Taxi were all pretty awesome.

They also went whole hog into the realm of online gaming with SegaNet and Phantasy Star Online, which I loved (sucked at, but loved). The VMU was also an interesting bit of tech: too bad the battery died insanely fast when you took it out of the controller.

...

Wow, when I break it down like that, I actually can see how the DC could have been the best...

Or was I totally off-base from what you were thinking?

I liked this episode, I like the "stupid story segments." I do think that while Phish' comments on Japanese gaming is probably did actually hurt him, what hurt him worse was the fact that what is actually interesting about Fez is so buried that it's still considered just a "Quirky platformer with a unique artstyle." It's certainly that, but some of the puzzles and the amount of brainwork they make you do are pretty unique. The idea of a universal console is something everyone wants that will probably never happen. Unless you count PC or something like OnLive, in which case it's already here.

Not bad at all.... really needed that to chill out actually. (Note for anyone reading... if you decide to pick up Hard Reset, play one skill below your normal. This game is BRUTAL, and teaching me that the hard way...)

Thanks for the evening's entertainment.

Megabyte- Get the rocket launcher and the "bullet time and armour if screwed" power. The rocket launcher is good for large groups and single tough enemies. The bullet time means you are less likely to get wiped if you are caught off guard.

I've not played the new content yet though. Is a good game, I wonder what they are making next.

I have to agree with Biff. Do you honestly think your videos are IMPROVED by unfocused, murky clips of you playing with plastic swords? I just can't get my head around that. I thought you were just happy putting out crap because you wanted an excuse to play dress up, but are you seriously under the impression that this is better than just doing the commentry on its own. What bloody planet do you live on?

So, I have to ask. If OverThinker gets 7 of those gems, does he turn into, say, Super OverThinker?

Did you base your elemental thinkers off of the Four Elemental Archfiends from Final Fantasy IV, Moviebob?

@Botman: I really have to ask, why do you bother to watch if you don't enjoy the format? There are dozens of gaming commentary shows all over the net that use essentially Bob's original slideshow and voice format to make basically the same points he does in basically the same way. Several of them were doing that before he did it in fact, because it's an easy format if you don't have the resources to do more. Outside Lewis Lovhaug there are few other people than Bob who do anything story driven let alone action heavy story driven stuff resembling '70s and '80s tokusatsu.

On the story itself: I'm suspecting this to go to five stones. The colors match Asian mystical elements rather than European ones (yellow typically being air in European systems vs being earth in Asian ones), and it fits Bob's preferences in terms of gaming better. Whether it's going to go Taoist (with metal and wood outstanding) or Five Rings (with air and void outstanding) is what I'm trying to guess now.

Just a general comment/observation (not meant to be negative in any way whatsoever) - surely I cannot be the only one who takes a look at Overthinker's white suit/blue shirt combo (when he's using the ice crystal) and instantly be reminded of Larry Laffer?

Botman said...

@vlademir1: That's a lot of words to trot out the same old argument of "Dont like, don't watch".

Truth is, I'm probably just one of those bitter old fans who voted on his show back in the day when it was straightforward with no story, and I just can't let go. Maybe I should just stop watching through the normal method at this point.

And I am aware that there are others who use the same format Bob used to stick exclusively to, but out of the ones I've found, only Razorfist interested me enough for a subscription.
