The latest trailer for Suda51 and James Gunn's action/horror spoof "Lollipop Chainsaw" reveals the game's bad guy, "Swan," who has one of the most appropriate "goth kid" voices I've heard in something like this - he's not credited, but people are telling me it's probably Michael Rooker. (And, yes, that's Tara "Twilight Sparkle" Strong as the main character.)
Its a crime that Tara Strong, one of the greatest voice actors ever, has to be referred to by one of her many great roles in order for the internet to understand who she is. I mean, we will soon have to refer to Frank Welker, the god of all voice acting, as "the Scooby-Doo guy"? Not bashing MLP, won't ever make that mistake, but Tara Strong has been around long before Twilight Sparkle, and I think it is a disgrace that she did the voice for the awesomeness that was the animated Teen Titans Raven, and she is best known around the interwebs as a miniature horse.

To the first post... MLP is her most famous role right now. The Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans might have been great, but neither are 2012 shows. It's a very different case from, say, Dan "Homer Simpson" Castellaneta, who still voices the absurdly famous character today.

One of the better aspects of this game is that it looks like a game within a TV show. Like when a character is playing a game in the background, with some fake cheesy name and a silly soundtrack. Time will tell if it's any good, I don't think it'll compare to Suda51's excellent Killer 7 unless I'm amazed, but still it's got me excited.
ReplyDeleteAlso, @ first commenter; who's David Prowse? Ever heard of him? How about Darth Vader? Prowse was the man under the mask, and James Earl Jones said that he took influence from how Prowse spoke on the shoot. People recognise voice actors by the characters they play. A lot of people DO know who Tara Strong is, but we don't physically SEE her like we can see, say, Harrison Ford. I know that typecasting isn't great, but it's no crime to voice a character who's famous enough to be identifiable without an actor. We all know who Scarlet Johannson is, but I doubt you can name one of her characters from memory. You see Scarlet Johannson.

It seems like Suda's games are getting less crazy over time. I only have very limited experience with suda's games other than killer7, which was a ridiculous game that made very little sense unless you read an in depth analysis to explain the plot. No more heroes seemed to make sense while having several random elements. Lolly pop chainsaw seems to be a straight up zombie parody. I wonder what led suda in a more sane direction.

Is it me, or does the main character remind me of a cute Harley Quinn without the costume(And ironically, Tara Strong took over for Arleen Sorkin as the voice of Harley in Batman: Arkham City)

Resident Evil is probably the only game that can actually use zombies without making it a pop culture cliche. Oh that's right, for the last two games they've stopped usng zombies because THEY'RE A POP CULTURE CLICHE.

She also won an award for voicing Rikku in FFX and FFX-2, which everyone except me hated.

I can tolerate the generic zombies, when the story is about something besides "ZOMFG Zombies R Scary!!1!," and the generic-ness of the zombies is being used to make a comedic/subversive point. This is why Shaun of the Dead is one of the greatest movies ever made, while Resident Evil and all its clones are tripe.

Still, it's interesting to see that she's been in a previous Suda51 game.
