There are a few reasons for that, but the main one is that I'd been waiting to hear back on some test-results from my doctor (newly-acquired, along with my new health insurance). The tests came back today, and... well, it wasn't great news.

I have what's called Type 2 Diabetes.

Briefly: No, this isn't (in most cases and mine) the "needle of insulin daily" Diabetes. This is a less-dangerous, manageable condition that presents basically the same symptoms - or, at least, thats my understanding of the matter, I'm really still learning. The bottom line is, I'm sick. Which is a place I never wanted to be, which scares the hell out of me and which has left me feeling beaten, depressed and (most of all) mad at myself because I'm keenly aware that it's my own fault.

Here's the thing: 3 years ago when I moved into my current apartment, one of the things I resolved to do was lose weight and get in shape - I had to budget myself, and I figured cutting down on food/snacks/etc would be a win-win for my wallet and my wasteline. Weight had been a problem of mine since High School, and through a combination of cutting down portions, avoiding excess carbs, not keeping sweets or soda around the house and a self-imposed exercise regimen of walking and lifting I tried to get a handle on it. I watched what I ate. I chugged water instead of anything sweet. I bought a bicycle and a heavy-bag and used both of them frequently.

And it worked. I dropped a bunch of weight (you can see the fluctuations across old OverThinker episodes) and felt great about myself. I never stopped being hungry all the time, never stopped wanting to eat a giant dish of lasagna or a full rack of ribs for dinner with cake and/or cookies for dessert (which took work, since I'm a decent-ish cook and can just MAKE that stuff if I wanted it badly enough) but I got there. I was productive, getting healthier, turning out more and better work than ever and making more time for family, friends and relationships.

Unfortunately, around the tail end of this same period, a family issue that had been building for far too long was starting to come to a head. The details are, with respect, not for the public - suffice it to say: If someone you love is doing something that is damaging to themselves and those around them, don't wait to confront them about it until they're so far gone that the things that need to be done to help them have to happen against their will.

So that went down. And then, shortly after (or, rather, in the midst of the rebuilding process) I lost my regular professional gig at The Escapist suddenly and without warning. The fallout from that has been getting better, thanks in no small part to the generosity of my fans, but remains unsure and a source of constant stress. And while this was going on... yeah, I got into a depression. That's not to say that I HAVE Depression, but that I was regularly depressed. Down. Feeling bleak about the state of my life and my ability to escape it - like the man said, I don't want to survive... I want to live.

And so I fell into the stupid trap of justifying lapses in any type of self-care that wasn't altogether enjoyable. I couldn't control the economy, or the lack of employment opportunities around me, or the behavior/misbehavior of loved-ones; but I could control my leisure time and my food. So I ate what I wanted, when I wanted, in the portions I wanted. And I stayed home and slept late and did anything but exercise for fun.

I gained back my weight and then some, I lost energy, and now here I am.

Thus far, it mostly... "existentially" sucks. The idea of self-improvement is something I'm all about, but I sort-of loathe the idea of it happening out of medical-necessity instead of self-drive. I love food, particularly the sort that helped get me here, and I find myself literally tearing-up at the thought of potentially having to cut certain things out of my life entirely. I know that sounds pathetic in general and especially in light of people starving elsewhere etc., but... yeah, that's going to be rough. Walking through the supermarket to the pharmacy to get my new medications today felt like a surreal hell: Cookies, pastry, sherbert... will I ever get to enjoy them without thinking about blood sugar and medicine?

The good news is, it's a manageable and (in my case) potentially beatable condition, under the circumstances. I'm on medication, have a regular physician and an appointment with both a condition-specific counselor and a nutritionist (NONE of which I'd have without insurance, which I wasn't be able to afford before Obamacare, FYI) and with that plus the necessary changes in lifestyle I intend to beat this thing. I'm not terribly fond of my own mortality (one reason I'm 999% pro-science in almost all circumstances: I want that brain-in-robot-body/cloned-replacement-parts near-immortality shit in MY lifetime) and I certainly don't plan to die early.

So... that's what's going on with me. I'm aware that I'm opening myself to a lot of "what'd you expect, fatty?" from the usual suspects, but the fact is I'm not good at separating my "public persona" from what's actually going on with me, and I don't want my profile to become a mess of cryptic allusions to "life changes" and "doctors." I have a condition, I'm working to overcome it, the end.

Where this effects you, the fans? Hopefully, not at all. Ideally, this shouldn't prevent me from doing my job as I have been and seeking out more of it to do as well. GAME OVERTHINKER will continue. IN BOB WE TRUST will continue. THE MOVIEBOB PATREON is still up, running and appreciates your continued support. And fans should stay tuned to OverThinker this weekend especially, for some teases about upcoming October programming that should make long-time fans very happy.

This is not going to beat me, and one of the reasons for that is that I've promised my fans and followers cool stuff and hard work and don't intend to let anyone down.

Thank you,

Bob.
The first six episodes of the new show (and with the six for IN BOB WE TRUST) were part of a trial-run for both franchises with ScrewAttack. And because of viewers' enthusiastic reception, both series will now continue into 2016. So, thank you all :)
One thing I want to make clear about this episode: The goal here is not to try and say that gaming has no "women problem." It does, and to a certain degree always has (in the sense that the whole of human culture pretty-much "always has.") However, I do find myself on the other side of the argument that holds the current state of representation in gaming and gamer-culture (abysmal) as some kind of logical progression from the early days.

Gaming isn't in the place it is (bad) regarding these issues because Princess Peach got kidnapped a lot. She did, and that's not great, but in those same decades strong female characters existed in a much greater prominence than history tends to remember. We're not here as the end-result of some built-in flaw that was in gaming from the beginning, we're here because the course of the medium's development was derailed (and indeed set back) by a decade of pandering to a singular bro-gaming market demo.

The call for greater representation now (whether all of those making the call realize it or not) isn't so much a cry for radical change as it is (in many respects) for restoration.MovieBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226832228090053258noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6031707140462457270.post-46005163309501859632015-07-12T17:38:00.001-07:002015-07-12T17:38:06.402-07:00RIP Saturo Iwata - 1959-2015Tragic news. Saturo Iwata, the colorful CEO and "public face" of Nintendo since 2002, has died of an ongoing health issue at the age of 55.
Described as a "genius programmer" in his youth, Iwata begna his gaming career working at Nintendo-affiliate HAL Laboratories on classics like EARTHBOUND, the KIRBY series and BALLOON FIGHT. His elevation to CEO at Nintendo - the first man not descended from the company's founding-family to ever hold the position - was widely seen as an overdue turn toward modernity for the fiercely-traditional company, and he became a familiar and beloved presence to gamers and the gaming press for his participation in the offbeat, humorous Nintendo Direct internet presentations.

The most important thing, obviously, is sympathy and condolence to Iwata-san's friends and family, but there is no overlooking that this is an incalculable loss to the video-game world. It was an open secret that Iwata was the main business-side force pushing the last giant of the Golden Age into embracing the modern game-culture more enthusiastically - in 2013, when the company was facing a financial shortfall, he famously took a major pay-cut in lieu of firing any employees. Without him, the future direction of the company and indeed the industry feels suddenly more uncertain than it has in a long time.MovieBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226832228090053258noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6031707140462457270.post-55432581818391220662015-07-12T14:05:00.001-07:002015-07-12T14:05:05.322-07:00JACKIE CHAN SHOULD BE IN SMASH BROS - NO, REALLY!MovieBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226832228090053258noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6031707140462457270.post-19044744746985444902015-06-28T15:28:00.004-07:002015-06-28T15:28:29.347-07:00In Defense of Video GamesMovieBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226832228090053258noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6031707140462457270.post-214378058911185562015-06-21T14:13:00.004-07:002015-06-21T14:13:56.402-07:00The CollectionFollowers of my Twitter are no doubt aware that I've begun a little side-project/hobby in collection every issue of NINTENDO POWER Magazine. It's more of a "spiritual fulfillment" thing than anything, I guess - begun while cleaning old stuff out of my parents' house and realizing that more of my original collection had survived than I'd thought. At this point I've done pretty well, nudging myself just over the halfway mark. Helpfully, I decided early on that I'm not interested in grabbing up "mint" copies of anything - like I said, quasi-spiritual thing, not an "investment." I see it more or less as "re-homing" copies that fans loved like I loved mine and aren't comfortable throwing out.

Thus far, collector shops and eBay have been doing the job well enough. But now that I'm at the point where bulk-buying big collections of random issues will almost-certainly land me more duplicates than "needs," I figured it can't hurt to also reach out to see if there are any fellow fans/collectors among my friends and readership who are looking to unload such items.

To be clear: I am NOT scrounging about for "donations" here - just to buy/sell/trade in a slightly more flexible/personal/"piecemeal" (if necessary) fashion than eBay is. Basically, if anyone out there reading this has any they'd like to unload, I'm interested in seeing what might be workable cash/tradewise. Of course, if anyone IS just looking to make space and doesn't think what they've got has a lot of collector value, I'll happily take (some) of it off your hands - though I really would prefer to give/exchange something for them. Let's talk, in any case :)

To give you an idea what I'm working with, the "need" list currently includes Volumes 1 & 2, 4-7, 9-11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 30, 38, 39, 45, 48, 50, 55, 56, 58, 64, 67-69, 76, 86, 87, 96, 98, 101-112, 114, 116, 123, 124, 133, 176, 180, 194-201, 204-207, 210-2113, 215-228, 231, 234-237, 240, 243, 246, 248, 251, 253-256, 258-262, 265-274, 277, 280, 282, 283 and 284; plus any/all NP-branded Strategy Guides excluding Pokemon (there's just too many.)

Yes, The Game OverThinker (aka me) is back in an all-new, all-different incarnation at ScrewAttack. You can watch the first episode on YouTube now (direct link to SA once there is one.)

This show and a second top-secret series will be running on alternating weekends for several weeks heading into Summer. Will there be more after that? Well, we want that to happen - but whether or not it does is at least in part up to YOU; since things can really only stick around if people want them to.

That's where you folks come in...

If you like the new show, liked the old show, like my other shows, want me to keep producing content in general, here's how you can help: Watch the show. Like/favorite/etc it. Tweet it. Facebook it. Share to every social media spot you post to. Send it to as many friends, family, colleagues, associates, enemies, whatever and ask them to ALSO like/favorite/tweet/facebook etc it. Hell, if you want to tell ScrewAttack that you like the show and want to keep seeing more of it, I bet that's a good idea, too!

I'm proud of this new series, I want it to succeed, and I need it to not just do well - I need it to blow the hell up :)

So, please - help me blow this thing up, huh?

P.S. If you're a fan of my other work and would like to show support for that as well, there's still always The MovieBob PatreonMovieBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226832228090053258noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6031707140462457270.post-59481211072817616802015-04-27T10:30:00.002-07:002015-04-27T10:30:37.571-07:00Oh, You Didn't Know???...Your ass better CALL SOMEBODY!!!

Dylan the rabbit, who portrayed Commissioner John "Bunnyface" Buonoffacio on the series, is no longer with us. At an unknown time today while his humans were out, he (apparently) sustained an accidental self-injury that is, I'm told, unfortunately common in his species; and the only humane care option was to put him down earlier this evening.

We (myself, Dylan's pet-parents and everyone who knew him) are devastated. He was a loyal friend, beloved by all who came to know him and, to the end, an emphatically good bunny. He went to rest peacefully, with the people who loved him best, and he will be missed, dearly. I ask that you please send whatever prayers, thoughts, well wishes or "good vibes" you may be able to spare to Dylan's family and loved ones, who are understandably having a very difficult night.

Rest in peace, my friend. We will never forget you.
*P.S. I welcome Game OverThinker fans to share any thoughts or memories they have of Dylan's appearances on the show below. Additionally, given the sad nature of the event I ask that those who've made it their regular place to troll every post on this blog please be respectful and not do so in this case - because any abusive, mean-spirited on hurtful comments I see on this post will be deleted and likely result in an IP ban. Alright, many regulars have likely noticed that the Disqus comment-section under the original EPISODE 100 post has vanished, replaced by a mostly-empty thread using the default Blogger comments engine. I'm as annoyed about it as I imagine many of you are, and while I harbor no illusions that this explanation will satisfy anyone inclined to believe that I deleted the thread because I disagreed with certain posters; I feel I owe an explanation anyway:

Basically, Blogger's software really sucks; and I neglected to click one of the suck-proofing options. So it's certainly my fault, while not my intent.

Here's the deal: Blogger's default posting setup automatically includes a proprietary comments-section on each post. However, though it's a pain in the ass given the system's outdated programming, you can set an alternate comments-system (like Disqus, which is what I use) to override it and appear instead. For me, this was preferable because Disqus allows users to log-in using pre-existing social media IDs like Facebook/Twitter/etc rather than needing to create a Blogger or Google ID just to comment on my site... and yes, also because it allows a robust set of tools for eliminating spam and banning the IPs of users who exhibit abuser behavior toward other posters.

However! Because, as stated above, Blogger's software really sucks, opting for an alternate commenting engine doesn't REMOVE their default comments-section from existance on individual posts automatically - it just "hides" it, and if you don't check a small box in the making of a post that disables Blogger comments (it doesn't even specify that it won't effect third-party comment systems) the default just sits there in the background. And if someone ends up viewing the post on certain older browsers or a mobile device with certain web settings enabled (or disabled), they're sometimes able to see the default comment-box instead of Disqus... and if they post that way, Blogger brings IT'S commens to the front and the Disqus threads disappear.

That's what happened on the original EPISODE 100 post. It's a shitty bug and I feel bad about it since it was my mistake not to click the "disable" option originally, but it happened. As such, I invite anyone who so wishes to re-post/revive any conversations and threads they were participating in there in this post; and if any particularly web-saavy folks are able to conjure a cached/archived page of the original Disqus posts by all means please feel welcome to post it below:
Straight and to the point: What you may have heard already is true - I am no longer working for The Escapist.

The last episode of ESCAPE TO THE MOVIES ran today (It's Kingsman, it's good) as did the last INTERMISSION.

I'll have more to say later (right now, I've an appointment to keep) but suffice it to say that I am devastated, heartbroken and quite upset by this turn of events, which came mostly as a surprise to me. I am grateful for the time I had there, for the platform that was afforded to me and - most of all - to my loyal fans and readers, who I hope will follow me to whatever venture comes next. And for those wondering: No, this has nothing to do with hashtags, "consumer revolts" or any other such nonsense - not that I expect that will keep the chattering class at bay in that regard, but facts are facts

I have several projects that are already in the offing, which I will now likely be announcing sooner or later. I'd ask anyone who hasn't already done so to please subscribe to my YouTube Channel.

I am where I am because of my fans, followers and viewers - I have not forgotten that, and will not. It's going to be a rough near-future, for this and a variety of other reasons, but I plan to emerge on the other side of it in better shape and ready for great new things. And I hope that you will join me there.MovieBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226832228090053258noreply@blogger.com0
