It Lives

As part of moving into the new place, I've been looting my parents' house for old stuff I can still use. One discovery turned out to be my original NES and collection of games; which tonight underwent a thorough disassembling, cleaning with rubbing-alcohol (system and carts) and reassembling.

The entire process was tweeted game by game (sorry, people who don't like tweetspam, I was excited is all.) and this is my favorite photo I took of the process - you can't quite see it in this image, but the NES is on a shelf below the Wii and XBox; connected via the HDTV's inexplicable-yet-welcome coax input.

ALSO: You may or may not be able to watch the newest episode HERE.

I still haven't fully furnished the place - money is kinda tight right now, to be honest - but I'll be springing for some kind of plug-extender so I can properly get the oldschool big-ass AC adaptor into my surge-protector (the NES was plugged into another, not-always-convenient outlet for this test run.

After that? Let the word go out to every sold, pawned, yard-sale'd, lost and forgotten NES cartridge on the North Shore: I am coming for you, and you WILL live again!

I'm surprised you didn't get an NES earlier. What will happen to the games you already own on the Virtual Console?

Congrats on rediscovering the NES! I'm the same as you; once I have a bunch of games to play, I have to sit and clean them one by one. I'll test them individually, and if I'm not able to get something to load within a minute, I make a stack of games to be cleaned again and so on.

Interesting. I thought you would have needed a scan converter.

I have my PS2 hooked up to my HDTV, and sometimes sometimes is blurry to the point where text can be hard to read. It made me think of getting a PS2 emulator and using that.

Ealier this year I bought some RCA cables for my Dreamcast. I also have a VDA and a capture card, so I might record my customary play of Toy Commander Christmas at the end of the year if anyone care about that stuff. I also have an unopened copy of Runabout: San Francisco I am saving for a special occasion.

Hey Bob, you might want to change the aspect ratio to 4:3. Right now you are stretching out the pixels and some games will probably look really ugly. I find it helps anyway.

My son makes me laugh because we have my old system set up and without any one showing or telling him, he has learned to blow into the bottom of the cartridge and plug it back in. I always wondered if doing that actually did anything??

@sequence kid

Blowing into the cartridge may knock some dust loose, but it doesn't fix the corrosion in the copper connections, which is the real problem. Blowing on the cartridge actually deposits moisture from your breath which can further corrode the connectors.

dear god you have it connected with coax video? you poor bastard. I think my old NES had the audio and video out on the side via RCA which is still not that good but better than coax. I special ordered a wire to hook my Genesis to my plasma via rca so that it had a decent image (compared to the RF adapter via coax). considering all the money you must make on your web shows I am surprised you haven't thrown a few piles of cash at.. idunno.. a thrift store and grabbed an old sony WEGA tv that would better display everything old schol. HDTV's work but they tend to distort or spoil the image in various ways.

Still, glad to hear you're settled and kudos on the latest video. Now get settled and get happy! hehehe

X Box is one of my favorite game habit I've always been a fan of gaming industry and powered by Real Time Gaming software – indeed one of my early big hits (for $4000) came courtesy of a game running on this platform.
