Capcom Uses PS3 Exclusives to Flip Off Mega Man Fans

Hat-tip: ScrewAttack

Capcom does NOT have a good relationship with "Mega Man" fans these days. Series creator Keiji Inafune left the company last year, and the lack of (good) new projects in the series coupled with the cancellation of "Mega Man Legends 3" and "Mega Man Universe" has turned fans heavily negative on the company.

Capcom's irritation at the situation, along with irritating at the constant drumbeat for the character to pop up as a guest-star in the company's numerous crossover titles, HAS to have just a tiny bit to do with the content this trailer for PS3-exclusive characters in "Street Fighter vs. Tekken;" in which Mega Man is featured in a somewhat unexpected form...

Yup. "American NES Box-Art Mega Man."

I suppose on one level I have to admire the skill/audacity involved in this kind of "trolling;" but I can't say it doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth. Of all the various types of "fanboys" who could stand to be brought down a peg... I feel like Mega Man fans - hell, fans of retro-gaming franchises OTHER than first-party Nintendo properties - are having a rough enough time without Capcom telling them to go fuck themselves. Though, honestly, for me it's not half as painful as watching twerpy "Cole" knock-out Ryu (yeah, right...)

Finally, a Mega Man I can relate to. I hope he too has a drinking problem and is awkward around woman that are not also robots.

Wow, they really wanted to shut up the Marvel vs Capcom fans

How is this an insult, exactly? I think this is the most hilarious and cool bit of fanservice ever.

Really? Really? People are seriously complaining about this?

1) Street Fighter X Tekken is obviously a game that's going to be on the sillier side of things, with a little tongue-in-cheek humour, and Bad-US-Box-Art Mega Man? That's frigging hilarious and nerdy. Remember, Namco are using crappy 'Pacman 3' version of Pacman, albiet on a robot. That's the point. This isn't Capcom telling the Mega Man fanbase where to get off the bus; it's them being daft. They probably thought that people would find that funny, an ice-breaker of sorts.

2) You know what, if I was in charge of Capcom and every game I made I had to put in Mega Man just to please some people who aren't even pleased with the character's state in gaming (a state they are demanding), I'm surprised Capcom didn't pull this sooner. Maybe I'm wrong and it really is them trolling the fans on purpose, or maybe it's just them wanting a little variety in wheeling out Mega Man in everything they do, but still I can see the logic in this joke.

3) Why the fuck do people want Mega Man to come back? Mega Man, the series that became stagnant even back in the NES days. Dear lord, as much as I complain about the constant returns of Mario, at least it took about twenty years or so for him to become stagnant. Mega Man did it in about four years. Why can't game series just end anymore? Why can't we have a singular plot that ties together neat and tidy, that ends on a high note and remains a classic? Games still sell after they come off the shelves. People are still playing and buying classics - Citizen Kane DVDs sell well, so what is with this fear of ending? And surely if Mega Man fans are the only people demanding a new Mega Man game, and yet are the people most vocally criticising of the state of the character, why not just drop him? I know it's not a very fitting or very good ending, but if you can't bow out gracefully at least know when you've outstayed your welcome.

And hey, American Box-Art Mega Man is certainly a much more memorable choice for a character. No one would give a shit if bog-standard Mega Man was the choice. The story mode might even make a gleeful satire of starting a new series in the game industry - American Box-Art Mega Man only wanting to be as good as his aging Blue Bomber counterpart but always in his shadow, unable to make something of himself or get the funding he needs to get a career started because everyone's giving money to an increasingly irrelevant, dying old man who also secretly wants to disappear forever but is propped up by the fat cats pulling his strings and the hateful fans who gob on him...

... they won't, but that'd be even funnier.

Okay, it's official... Capcom is just fucking with people now. Seriously, THAT Mega Man design? And Pac-man, really?

Now I can get behind Cole McGrath as a character (Sorry Bob, but I have to disagree - he is a good character and Infamous was an awesome game.) And that just leads me to wonder why they didn't have other good characters included instead of jokes? Seriously, I wanna see Garrus fight Blanka.

Spongey Blob said...

@ James

Pacman is a Namco property, not Capcom. SFxT is a Namco and Capcom collaboration, so if Capcom wants to put in Mega Man (a choice that still baffles me a little, but whatever), I don't see why Pacman would hurt. Why Cole or... whatever those two cats are doing in the game is anyone's guess, though.

As a big Mega Man fan, I find this pretty hilarious. Sure, we've been screwed out of two Mega Man games in the past year and are constantly snubbed when it comes to the crossover games. (Yeah, we got "classic" Mega Man in older MvC, but no one wanted him to look like that. We wanted him to have the sprite size of Mega Man Volnutt in TvC but all the tricks of the original. Alternatively, we would have appreciated X.) Sure, Mega Man properties that show promise are now dropped because they don't have the sales of collect-them-all Battle Network. But you know what? We're just happy to be acknowledged. NES box art Mega Man is worth a laugh and actually makes a good fit for the art style of SFxT.Plus there's something very fitting about his fighting the overly-muscular version of Dr. Wily known as Heihachi Mishima.

Here's a bigger insult to injury for Mega Man fans. It seems Yoshinori Ono consulted Keiji Inafune over including Mega Man in the game, and Inafune may have been responsible for adding this guy in.

Along with what Flame said it dosn't help that his back story is the same as Volnutt's

Capcom's been diggin' their own foxhole for a long time coming.

Still not clear what your problem about Sony getting all the love when Mega Man Legends got it's start on the PlayStation platform but suddenly MegaMan Legends 3 was put on a different exclusive platform for the seemingly hell of it; OR that Nintendo didn't grease enough palms to have to get MegaMan on a Wii version of the game. Or for that mattered, gave third-party enough incentive to port the game to the Wii in the first place. I understand that was a shot in the dark, and possibly a lowbrow one at that.

And say what you will about Cole, but he's probably less "offensive" entry than Capcom's addition of "fat MegaMan" into the game, if that even makes sense. At least at this point the inFamous franchise hasn't ground itself into the ground as MegaMan has.

flamebreak said...

Bob, what exactly is it that you have against Cole McGrath? Is it his standard caucasian design and gravely voice, because outside of those things he is a very good character (when you play as the Hero that is) not to mention inFamous 1 and 2 have excellent plots.

Megaman, I couldn't really care less about. The original games weren't terribly well designed; the epitome of cheap level design and enemy placement. The only thing that really interested me was the X-series.

Not sure why they didn't go with a 3rd person shooter/platformer in the vain of Ratchet and Clank, it could have been great.

Oh well, Capcom are throwing potential profit down the toilet and er.....I don't care.

Yeah, nothing like a bland, generic character beating up another bland, generic character. I'm deeply insulted :)

Fusion said...

You could, probably, do an entire OverThinker episode about how Capcom treats Mega Man as a franchise.

Jay said...

@Fusion

He did. It was all about the Mega man route to game making. I forget which exact episode though.

But any and ALL reason to buy this game just died with how they've treated MM over the years.

Fusion said...

@Jay:

Oh. Then perhaps an episode on the community's reaction to recent events concerning Mega Man could be done? Probably some hard truths to be had for both sides of the supposed coin (fans and Capcom).

ScrewAttackSamus said...

Oh please, it's not like Mega Man hasn't had DOZENS of fucking games over the years. And you wanna blame ANYONE for MML3 and MMU (the latter of which apparently wasn't very good from what previews were saying AND had bad box art Mega Man which, oddly enough, people found FUNNY) getting canceled, blame that bitter, whiny, self-xenophobic crybaby Inafune for deciding to have a midlife crisis and leave his men to the wolves.

And secondly, can SOMEONE tell me why Ono had to get Inafune's blessing? Cuz Inafune didn't make Mega Man. At all. He was the artist at best. The actual creators were Akira Kitamura or Tokuro Fujiwara. Inafune just got lucky being assigned as the artist, essentially being the video game version of Ringo Starr. Never actually designed a game in his life and road on the coattails of a fake pedigree.

Anyway, this is not somehow degrading to Mega Man. Even if it was X or even Ol' Blue I'm pretty sure way too many Mega Man fans would still act like immature shitheads. It's not like they're acting any better than they say CAPCOM is.

Penner said...

So just to be clear:

Capcom releases two silly, tongue in cheek retro throwback games and the fandom rejoices.

Faced with setbacks and disappointments Capcom does the exact same thing only on a completely inconsequential level (lets be honest) with a silly tongue in cheek retro throwback character added to a cross-over fighting game. And the fandom's collective reaction is to freak out?

Yeah, not impressed. And I kind of expected a little more perspective.

Personally, I'm more offended by the inclusion of that Jackass Cole. Oh dear ...

Smashmatt202 said...

Honestly, I don't have a problem with this Mega Man in the game. After all, the original Mega Man is a young boy with anime eyes, he doesn't really "fit" the game's style as well as this version of Mega Man.

Either way, it's a crazy addition that I would never expect, so I see it as an extra treat, thanks to Capcom.

Smashmatt202 said...

It still kind of sucks that there aren't many Mega Man announcements, even though it's his 25th anniversary.

Rusty said...

I don't understand all the butthurt. This is the most intentionally hilarious thing CAPCOM has done in years. I guess I don't get it because I agree with Blobey Sponge that Mega Man has been a shitty series for decade or more now. I'm one of those people who doesn't think that "incredibly difficult" doesn't always equate to being a good game.

ScrewAttackSamus said...

because people forget that companies and corporations, while a lot of things, lack the quality of pettiness. You have to have a soul to do that. For example, they just announced Ace Attorney 5. CAPCOM still has talented people that are trying to make good games or please the fans, even if they have to tangle with management that was probably influence too much by that hack Inafune.

Hypershell said...

Supposedly this was approved by Inafune back in 2010, when Universe ("this" Mega Man being playable) and Legends 3 ("Digger" profession as listed on Capcom's website: http://www.capcom.co.jp/sfxtk_en/playstation.html ) were still in production. It seems nobody in the SFxT crew realized that after both games were cancelled, that particular joke is left in extremely bad taste.

You know, Bob, ever since Legends 3 was cancelled, I've been hoping to hear your thoughts on the state of Mega Man, or even Capcom in general, on TGO. I recall you touching on them briefly back in ep 56 (excellent show, btw).

hazlenaut said...

When I said this would shut up m vs c fans. I mean that would make us pause and think. Perhaps we should do it a little bit longer. Most of us took it as joke or an insult. I took it as a more puzzling look. Remember Mega Man was taken as merchandise in other Capcom games. Megaman has an absurd timeline. We don’t know which to take as an alternate universe or part of the time line. Do we consider this mega man as propaganda for disguise Mega Man actions stating that it was human character that saved human kind or do we count it as an alternate universe?
Speaking of connections Street fighter has connected with Darkstalkers, Ghost and Goblins, Three Wonders, and Mega Man in one game and it was called Canon Spike. We already know that Final Fight is connected with Street Fighter in several games. Tekken Yoshimitsu is connected soul caliber by the family tree clan and Heihachi time travel to Soul Caliber just to show how tough he is.
